Estampas y Raíces
This CD compiles Spanish sketches from the 19th and 20th centuries that live on in Pepe Rivero’s memory. Through his own recollections and life experiences, the Cuban pianist and composer taps into this archive of memories and images that enrich his musical journey, offering us a reflective and introspective perspective conveyed with delicacy and a touch of nostalgia.
The recording stands out thanks to the selection of pieces and the diversity of referenced composers that Rivero proposes. From the very beginning, he invites us to follow the path he constructs through his musical discourse, where his voice and improvisational skill guide us along an imaginary journey that he now shares with us.
As a true Latin musician, his versatility brings cohesion to ideas and weaves together interpretations of pieces he places as both near and far—connected through the symphonic and chamber music traditions of Spain spanning different moments of the 19th and 20th centuries. He brings together composers such as Miguel Marqués, Jesús Guridi, Isaac Albéniz, Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Francisco Tárrega, Joaquín Turina, Federico Mompou, and our own Ernesto Lecuona.
His background as a jazz pianist allows him to delve into familiar themes from these composers and engage in a musical dialogue with them, complementing their original ideas with jazz harmonies and melodic textures that reveal both the legacy of his classical training and the cosmopolitan vision of a sonic event in which he himself takes part as the protagonist of these overlapping universes.
All that remains is to recommend a careful and attentive listen, to fully enjoy the “variations on themes” captured in this recording. I am confident that throughout this creative journey, Pepe Rivero will lead us to discover new perspectives on tradition. Let them be welcomed.
