Siempre en mi corazón
Between Cuba and the world: Pepe Rivero’s contemporary jazz look at Lecuona’s work
With Siempre en mi corazón Pepe Rivero offers a deep and personal tribute to Ernesto Lecuona, one of Cuba’s most universal composers. Thus, this project aims to reinterpret Lecuona’s work from a contemporary, jazz and Afro-Cuban perspective, but with great respect for its essence.
The repertoire chosen by Rivero reflects the richness of Lecuona’s musical universe, highlighting his synthesis of the African, Creole and Spanish spirit. Through his arrangements, Rivero combines symphonic and classical language with jazz and his Latin roots, bridging tradition and modernity.
This rich, hybrid approach is reminiscent of Xavier Montsalvatge’s West Indian period, especially in the way both composers integrate the colour and rhythm of the Caribbean into a refined and universal musical language. Like Montsalvatge, Lecuona drinks from tradition, and reinterprets it with his own sensibility, open to the world.
Pepe Rivero does an excellent job in this reinterpretation of Lecuona’s music, from his jazz point of view and with a unique sensitivity that enriches and renews this musical legacy, with elegance and depth. To do so, he relies on the collaboration of exceptional Cuban musicians who accompany him on the album and contribute, each with their own personality, a great sonic and expressive richness to the project.
